If you are a Devon school which has a new FCR database you will have a problem each time that FMS is updated by Capita because the standard Solus upgrade only upgrades the current database. This means you will receive an error if you attempt to login to the archived data after an upgrade.
This utility will automatically run DBUpgrade against both databases to ensure they are up to date against the current release.
The application can be found in your G:\SIMS\Setups\FMS folder or download it from here if you do not have a copy.
Schools who use the Scomis Sims Upgrade service do not need to run this utility as we will upgrade both databases during your upgrade.
Operation
This application should be run on the computer which holds the FMS databases. Simply launch the application, enter your user credentials and password then confirm the password and click “Proceed”. On screen prompts will notify you if there are any problems, there will be a prompt to say the process was successfull but this will close automatically after 30 seconds so you can leave this running at the end of the day.
A local disk backup of each database will be taken before the upgrade but you should still check that your overnight offsite backup (e.g. Attix) was successful the day before running this application.
Troubleshooting
This tool is primarily aimed at primary schools WSFS (workstation file servers) , it simply runs dbupgrade automatically twice, you may find it easier to manually run dbupgrade against each database rather than troubleshoot this tool. Application errors will have a brief description to assist with troubleshooting. The following numbered errors can be encountered:
- Error 01: This is the error you will receive if the DBUgpgrade command fails, this could be for any of the following reasons:
-
- Bad UsernameBad PasswordInsufficient rights to run dbupgrade with the user enteredProblems with the entries in the “SIMS\ScoMISFMSDatabaseSelector.ini” file, check the instance and DB are correct in this file.
- Bad Username
- Bad Password
- Insufficient rights to run dbupgrade with the user entered
- Problems with the entries in the “SIMS\ScoMISFMSDatabaseSelector.ini” file, check the instance and DB are correct in this file.
- Troubleshooting will involve running DBUpgrade manually, once that is working this application should work fine.
- Error 02: This means their is a problem accessing the %windir%\SIMS.INI file, either it does not exist or the user does not have permission to access it.
- Error 03: The SIMSDirectory referenced in the %windir%\SIMS.INI is not available, change it to a local or unc path if it was a mapped drive
Limitations / Known Issues
- The application has not been tested in a 64-bit environment
- If the success message appears really fast the database is probably already up to date
- The application has not been tested where UAC is enabled, choosing to Run As Administrator on the application “should” work.
