.doc – Microsoft Word Document – Automatically selected when saving in Word 2003

.docx – Microsoft Word Document – Automatically selected when saving in Word 2007 and 2010.

Cannot be opened by older versions of word without this additional install http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=3

.dot – Microsoft Word Template – Automatically selected when saving in Word 2003

.dotx – Microsoft Word Template

Automatically selected when saving in Word 2007 and 2010. Cannot be opened by older versions of word without this additional install http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=3

.rtf – Rich Text Format file

.txt – Plain Text File

.odt – Open Office Document  – Automatically selected when saving in Open Office.

Not automatically compatible with Word 2003 and 2007. When saving users will have had the option to save to with one of the Word formats so if you have Word 2003 you will have to request they send it again in the .doc format. With Word 2007 you can download and install http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=5 to make them compatible.
