I have been sent an email containing a docx file but it will not open in Word.

DocX files are generated through Word 2007 and above these files are incompatible with earlier office versions. There is a compatibility pack on the Microsoft website which will allow DocX files to be opened in earlier versions of Office. Download and install the pack from here – Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

Please note that Office 2003 is no longer supported by Microsoft and users should consider upgrading as a matter of priority.
