BROMCOM: Phonics Screening Check 2025

This FAQ is for the users in school who need to carry out the Phonics Screening Check.

The collection of the Phonics Screening Data Check is for Key Stage 1 All Pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 Pupils who didn’t meet the threshold last academic year.

To start please make sure all users who need access have been setup following:

Step 1: Make sure required users have the required permissions

To set the configurations to access the setup of the Key Stage Assessment Marksheets in Bromcom you need to go to Config > Setup > Roles and Permissions.

Select the role of the user carrying out these steps (Teacher/ SchoolAdmin – This will need to be decided in school for who is carrying out the setup of the marksheet) then Edit.

 

 

 

 

Change the Module to Assessment from the Drop Down

Click Collapse All, Open up Maintenance and put a tick in for Configurations for Actions and Save and then Save these changes at the top of the page.

Then go to Routines and Tick Access for Assessment Sheet List

and press Save

Step 2 – Setup the Marksheets

Go to Config > Assessment > Configurations and put the tick in Enable Sheet Users.

 

 

 

 

 

You can then tick which Staff Roles will require access to the marksheets (this will need to be decided in school) or use the staff search to individually select the staff to have access. This will need to be any users who need to input or view the data.

  • Enable Sheet Users – selecting this option will only allow the selected Roles and selected Staff in the Selection List to access and input data in the Stage Assessment Sheets.
  • Select individual users – use the blue magnifying glass to open the Staff selector page and select the members of Staff who are not defined in the Roles who also need access to the Stage Assessment Sheets. Alternatively type the Staff name into the box, if selecting a single member of Staff. The selected Staff will appear in the Selection List

Generate Templates for National Curriculum Year Groups Select all the NC Year groups for Key Stage from the Drop Down, for phonics make sure Year 1 and 2 are included but Reception, Year 1,2,4 and 6 should be Included.

Then press Save.

Step 3 – Access the Stage Assessment Sheets

As an Administrator: If the above has been carried out successfully the Phonics marksheets can be viewed via Modules > Assessment > Assessment Sheets List

Then select the Marksheet Type to be Stage Assessment 

These are the marksheets, for the Year Groups KS1-2025-01 for Year 1, KS1-2025-02 for Year 2 retaking pupils.

There will also be marksheets broken down into registration groups, if you have more than one registration group per year group then these will be individually listed.

Teacher View

From the Teacher Dashboard click on Marksheets

Then on the required marksheet press the eye icon under Actions to view the marksheet,

Step 4 – Entering in the Phonics Results

Once the marksheet is open you have the option to only show the two phonics columns by going to the cog on the right hand side and ticking to show Key Stage 1 Mandatory Subjects Only and Confirm.

You will now be left with these 2 columns Phonics Screening Check Outcome and Phonics Screening Check Mark as required to input the data.

  • Phonics Screening Check Outcome. Select the required outcome for the Student from the Grade Set.
  • Phonics Screening Check Mark. Select the required Mark for the student from 0-40 mark range

There are three ways to enter marks into Bromcom

  1. You can enter marks by clicking in each cell and entering the marks 1 by 1 for the Phonics Screen Check Outcome.

For the Phonics Screening Check Mark you can enter in the Marks by typing in the box.

2. Alternatively if you have a number of pupils with the same mark you can right click on the column heading and “Flood fill”

3. Lastly you can export the marksheet to Excel

Click on the first button shown below to download the Excel marksheet.

Open the marksheet from your Downloads folder

Fill in the marks in Excel

If entering a D as a mark for Phonics Screen Check Outcome the Phonics Screening Check Mark needs to be left blank.

Save the Excel document

Go back into Bromcom and click the second button shown above and locate your saved Excel file and Import.

Step 5 – Creating a CTF

To create a CTF in Bromcom click Students from the left hand side menu

Select the Year Group filter and tick the Year 1 and Year 2 and press filter.

You will then want to select all Year 1 pupils and only the Year 2 pupils who are retaking phonics for the CTF.

You should see a total pupil number in the top left to confirm the correct number.

Once you have all your students selected click the Actions button and select CTF Export

Select the Export Type to Phonics Return and tick the LA return box and select your LA.

Click Export

This file will then go to your Downloads ready for you to upload.

Step 6 – Upload CTF to Local Authority

Please check with your LA.

If you are a Devon school – Upload to Devon Transfer (Please note: For Devon this is a combined CTF with all Year 1’s and Year 2 retake pupils in 1 CTF. This is to only include Year 2’s who have retaken phonics this academic year)
