My attendance register is showing the pupil’s legal surname; how can I get it to show their chosen surname?

I am trying to change some attendance marks but cannot overwrite what is already there.
It sounds like the marks have been preserved. There is a toggle button at the top of the screen within Edit Marks, click on this to switch between overwrite and preserve.
