Managing Courses in SIMS

The Course Manager area in SIMS needs to be regularly maintained to make sure that information is kept up-to-date and relevant.

You can access this area by going to Tools > Academic Management > Course Manager.

Key activities that should be regularly checked in Course Manager include:

  • Check that all active Courses are still relevant and remove unused Courses by setting their Active State to ‘Inactive’ (p.29 of the ‘Managing Courses’ handbook)
  • Check that Courses are linked to the correct Subject and have the correct Examination and Classification details (p.31-35). When updating Classification details, if you are missing any QAN codes, you will need to import these via the QAN catalogue as per the following FAQ: Uploading and Importing the Current QAN Catalogue – Frequently Asked Questions
  • Check that Courses have the correct Supervisors (p.35)
  • Check that the correct Classes are associated with the Course (p.37)
  • Check that Course Memberships are correct and protect any Student Memberships where necessary. (p.38-45)
  • Run the ‘Update All Course Memberships’ routine (p. 73)

You will need to work with your school’s Exams Officer and Timetabler to ensure the information in Course Manager is correct.

For more information on how to carry out these key activities, please check the Managing Courses handbook.
